"What Gets Filtered Out by Speed,"
essay and review of Phillips Gallery exhibit, by Van Lewis, 15 Bytes, June 2006, p. 1 (scroll down) & p. 6. From the essay: "I have rarely seen a bunch of paintings that so strongly demands engagement and that deals so plainly in the following simultaneities: sensual and cerebral, abstract and figural, planar and spatial, journalistic and subjective. My enjoyment of these paintings is multilayered: they are forthcoming enough that I feel a simple pleasure in their colors, shapes, and sense of space, but they are difficult enough that I feel compelled to make sense of them, to put my mind to them."

Phillips Gallery, exhibit with Francesc Burgos, May 19 - June 9. Link to gallery page: works in exhibit.

"Urban Organica," + Gallery, Denver, CO, April 13 - May 19. Link to gallery page: works in exhibit and essay by Ivar Zeile, gallery director.
Zeile, says this about Arnold's work: "...a signature style based on tradition, spontaneity, memory, and technique. The paintings in "Urban Organica" are full of depth, skill and a connection to the environment that is thoroughly engaging."

chair of Western State Arts Federation and member of the Denver Commission of Cultural Affairs, April 14 at Plus Gallery - posted on his blog, "Mile High Chronicles."   Utah Arts Council's 2002 Fellowship Awardees:
Jean Arnold & David Delthony

The Utah Arts Council awards Fellowship to two artists annually. The exhibit included Jean Arnold's large mixed-media drawings of abstracted, surrealistic urban landscapes, and David Delthony's organic, sculptured wood furniture.

The juror, Townsend Wolfe, director of the Arkansas Arts Center, Little Rock, Arkansas, finds that the artists share common strengths: "Their clarity of vision, inventive exploration of space, solid statements of form, line and movement, caused me to understand and believe in their art."

A catalogue is available featuring the work of both artists, and is available on request.

  Review of 2002 Fellowship Exhibition

"Form and Function," review by Dave Gagon, Deseret News, October 6, 2002, p. E1, Salt Lake City, Utah

From the article: "Arnold's mixed-media paintings-early Hockney-esque musings on urban landscapes---blend bark, asphalt, sky, hydrants, drains, cars, jets and more into abstraction that make one believe she has been truly blessed with the chance to once again see with the simplicity of a child, while retaining her adept painting skills.

"Each painting wraps itself around the viewer's psyche, teasing the eye with bits of the recognizable while remaining reductive. They are wonderful."

Feature Articles in 15 Bytes magazine

"Jean Arnold Is Up to Something," review by John Erickson, 15 Bytes on-line magazine, September 2002, p. 1

From the article: "Arnold's images come from the urban landscape. She improvises from nature and freely reorganizes space. . . An unexpected surreal dimensionality begins to live its own rambunctious life. Bee-bop- like rather than impressionistic, Arnold's paintings "get the job done" with a surprising pictorial rightness. Deceivingly simple and elegant, this hard won language has been fought for. Resolute observations mixed with imaginative freedom are her trademark. Jean Arnold is "up to something.' "

Review of Finch Lane Gallery Exhibit, June-July 2002

"3 Artists Share Similarities,"review by Dave Gagon of The Deseret News, July 7, 2002, p. E2, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Gagon says this about Jean's work: "While Arnold's oils are diminutive in size, their presence is deceptively large...a result of the artist's bold forms and thick paint. But it is her watercolors that impress through contrast: opaque vs. transparent, light vs. dark, soft vs. hard. Her "Foyer View, Winter: 3" (watercolor on paper, 11 by 15 inches) is a good example of what she is capable of producing."
